How are you familiar with BSCS?

Basically, I know BSCS textbooks: the Brazilian’s Blue and Green versions and the Americans ones. I have visited BSCS website and know the materials produced more recently. I also know the history of the BSCS and its historical importance for the biology education.

How long have you known about BSCS?

My first contact with BSCS happened when I was at High School in Brazil, in the seventies, and I got to know briefly the BSCS Blue Version. Later on, in my teaching career I’ve used some of the BSCS materials to teach my High School Biology students. When I started my academic life, twenty years ago, BSCS became a research object, since part of my dissertation involved an analysis of curriculum development. Since then, I have kept BSCS as a reference for my research projects but only in the last five years that I have been doing a more in depth research on the BSCS itself.

My first contact with BSCS happened when I was at highschool in Brazil.Briefly, what is the nature of your research during this visit?

I am developing a curriculum historical research on the BSCS Brazilian translation and adaptation. I came to the US to understand the context of production of the BSCS and how this process was re-signified into the Brazilian context in the 60-70’. So, the visit to the BSCS was a key part of my research to collect prime data to help my understanding.

What, in general, comes to mind when you think of BSCS?

I think of it as a dream to change society through the learning of scientific (biological) rationality. I think of it as a joint effort to make it possible. I think of it also as a belief on the role of school to change society. And finally, I think of it as a proof of how much can be done when people from different spheres in society share the same belief.
