Dr. Joseph Taylor joined the BSCS staff in 2001 as a science teacher professional development and research specialist. His work in professional development involves helping schools and districts throughout the country design and deliver standards-based professional development for science teachers. This includes professional development programs designed specifically to support curriculum implementation. Surrounding this work, Joe has conducted research and published several articles on effective professional development for science teachers. Much of this work has focused on designing professional development that addresses the unique needs of “crossover” or out-of-field teachers and the role of research based instructional materials in improving teacher practice and student achievement.

Dr. Taylor taught high school physics and mathematics before completing a doctoral degree in Science Education at Penn State University (2001). At Penn State University, Joe designed and taught the course: Fundamentals of Science, Technology, and Engineering Design. This course focused on helping prospective elementary school teachers learn science, technology, and engineering concepts as well as make connections between these concepts and the K-6 science and mathematics curricula they would soon implement. From his research and other experiences in this course, Joe has written a number of articles and book chapters pertaining to K-6 engineering and technology education and related teacher preparation issues. These articles are published in journals such as the International Journal of Engineering Education, the Journal of College Science Teaching, School Science and Mathematics, and Physics Education.
