Paul Beardsley joined BSCS in January 2007. He works on the high school curricula BSCS Science: An Inquiry Approach and BSCS Biology: A Human Approach, the on-line professional development program for teachers of multidisciplinary science called Across the Sciences (a joint project with Oregon Public Broadcasting), and professional development with a range of teachers.

Prior to joining BSCS, Paul served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Idaho State University. In this position, Paul helped direct a doctoral level program in biological education and participated in an NSF GK-12 program matching graduate students in science with K-12 teachers. Paul was a co-PI on the recent continuation of this NSF grant. He taught graduate courses in biology education and educational research, trained pre-service teachers, and also taught graduate and undergraduate courses in evolution, ecology, botany and cell biology. Graduate students in his lab carried out research in plant evolution and biology education.

Previous to his work at Idaho State, Paul was a Visiting Professor at Colorado College for two years. During this time, he advised undergraduate research projects on plant evolution, taught courses in botany, ecology, cell biology and statistics, and taught in the 6-week Integrated Natural Sciences Summer Institute for M.A.T. candidates.

Paul earned his Ph.D. at the University of Washington in plant evolution. His research focuses on plant molecular systematics, the genetics of plant speciation, and the genetics of rare plants. His research interests in science education include student learning in evolution and scientist-teacher partnerships. Paul has published papers in journals such as Evolution, Ecological Monographs, the American Journal of Botany, American Biology Teacher and Science Activities.

Paul has had a long interest in teaching throughout the kindergarten through graduate school continuum. Paul earned a secondary science teaching license in Colorado and taught high school at Lewis Palmer and the Colorado Springs School. While a graduate student, Paul had an NSF GK-12 fellowship and worked in a year-long partnership with three middle school teachers. As a part of this program, Paul spent a month in China establishing connections with Chinese teachers. Paul has also taught five professional development courses for elementary teachers as a part of two large-scale NSF-funded science education reform projects.
