Sue Kowalski Sue Kowalski

Sue Kowalski joined the BSCS community at the end of May, 2007. She is currently working on the development of a nanoscience unit for inclusion in the third level of BSCS Science: An Inquiry Approach. Additional projects include work on the professional development program Across The Sciences: Multidisciplinary Learning for Teachers through Multimedia, a joint project with Oregon Public Broadcasting; and the Texas Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program (T-STEM) in collaboration with Texas Tech.

Prior to joining BSCS, Sue pursued her MA and PhD in the department of Curriculum & Instruction, Science Education at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her dissertation examined the intersection of race and gender in high school physics group work conversations. She has presented papers at the April, 2008 NARST conference, the ASTE conference in January, 2007, and at the AERA conference in April, 2007. Her primary research interests relate to teaching science for both excellence and equity.

Sue taught high school science for ten years in Bloomington, MN. While in Bloomington, she taught a sheltered physical science course for English Language Learners, general and AP physics, and all levels of physical science. Sue was also an active member of her teachers’ union, serving on the contract negotiations team for six years.

Sue received her BA in physics from Colorado College. Her hobbies include gardening, canning, running, biking, and swimming, choral singing, and reading.
