Science Educator Brooke Bourdelat Parks

Dr. Brooke Bourdélat-Parks joined BSCS as a Science Educator in August 2007. Currently, she is working on a project to develop information for research scientists interested in being involved in science education, as well as a module for middle school students on drug abuse.

Prior to joining BSCS, Brooke served as a visiting assistant professor with Oxford College of Emory University and Oglethorpe University, her alma mater. She taught a variety of courses at these schools, including genetics, biomedical ethics, cell biology, and anatomy and physiology.

During her postdoctoral training, Brooke was a part of the Fellowships in Research and Science Teaching (FIRST) program with Emory University. This program focused on the development of innovative teaching skills in fellows, in addition to a traditional research experience. As part of the program, Brooke helped to develop and teach a bioethics course for Morehouse College’s Summer Academy for incoming freshmen. She also performed research on dopamine beta-hydroxylase, the protein that converts the neurotransmitter dopamine to norepinephrine.

Brooke earned a B.S. in Biology and a Ph.D. at Georgia Institute of Technology, where her research focused on the thermodynamic properties of structural differences in DNA and RNA.
