For a scientific society to be democratic, the people themselves must understand the nature of the scientific forces and problems that dominate their lives.
Celebrating Darwin Day!
We celebrate the curiosity, wonder, and marvelous discoveries of Charles Darwin on this 204th anniversary of his birth.
In his curiosity, Darwin asked the following questions: If Earth has had a long history of change, what was it like before? Could it have supported the diversity of life it has now? What other forms of life might have lived long before now? And, he spent countless hours reviewing data and making observations around the world as he formulated his answers to these questions.*
BSCS endeavors to transform the teaching and learning of science so that every student has the opportunity to experience the wonder of the natural world by asking questions, gathering data, and developing explanations. In other words, we want every student to be a scientist! And to feel the thrill that drove Darwin from his decision to step foot on the Beagle to writing the final paragraph of On the Origin of Species.

The design at the top of this page features an excerpt from the pages of the journal Charles Darwin kept while aboard the HMS Beagle. The quote reveals Darwin’s firsthand experience of curiosity and wonder as he reflects on the rich diversity of plant and animal life found among the islands of the Galapagos. The early portrait of Darwin alongside a selection of his sketches and illustrations of flora and fauna, his initial tree of life sketch, and a selected page of his journal manuscript provide a visual journey into the mind of the scientist in the midst of the discovery that would change science and humanity.
