BSCS materials are cutting edge and present a student centered approach to the study of science.
BSCS Science Educator Rebecca Kruse will chair a symposium at the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education, held at Penn State on 28 July. Kruse will be joined by BSCS Science Educator Elaine Howes and AAAS's Cari Herrmann Abell.
The symposium is a five-paper set about "Toward High School Biology: Helping Middle School Students Make Sense of Chemical Reactions," a three-year partnership project between BSCS and AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science).
In this paper set, presenters will describe five components of the iterative work: 1) defining the content that will be addressed; 2) designing and developing a foundation curriculum unit: Toward High School Biology; 3) designing and developing teacher support materials and professional development; 4) measuring students’ understanding; and 5) measuring teachers’ knowledge of the curriculum.
