Dr. David Westmoreland will present "The Paradox of the Easter Bunny: A Darwinian Explanation for Brightly Colored Eggs."
Like the Easter bunny, many birds lay eggs that are brightly colored. Brightly colored eggs may seem more likely to attract predators than to go unnoticed. Biologists since Darwin have puzzled over how such a conspicuous trait could be adaptive. In the past fifteen years scientists have narrowed the field of potential explanations, leading to some surprising conclusions.
Dr. David Westmoreland is a Professor of Biology at the Air Force Academy where he teaches courses in evolution and the nature of scientific inquiry. A field biologist by training, he escapes to the wilds of the Sierra Nevadas each spring to search out and experiment with the nests of birds that lay stunningly beautiful and fascinating eggs.
Science on Tap is sponsored by the Colorado Springs Science Center Project (CSSCP) as a community outreach program designed to gather audiences in a fun and casual environment to learn from local scientists about contemporary science topics.
BSCS Executive Director Janet Carlson is a founding director of CSSCP, a collaborative, community-engaged initiative to build a science and technology center in Colorado Springs that stimulates and inspires the inquisitive mind.
