Professional Development
The professional development component of the project comprises leadership conferences, curriculum orientation workshops, site visits by BSCS staff, and a listserv for teachers to provide support for school districts and teachers nationwide as they implement the curriculum. This component of the project is modeled after a successful framework (Loucks-Horsley, S. et al, 1998) and helps districts and schools develop leadership teams to support and sustain the intellectual work of change and the successful implementation of an inquiry-based science program that spans the disciplines. BSCS also helps school districts develop a network within the community to promote important contributions of local universities, businesses, and industries.
Implementation Guide
As part of the professional development component, BSCS has developed a two-volume implementation guide. This guide addresses issues related to two major phases of implementation: (Volume 1) the awareness, assessing needs, and planning for change and (Volume 2) the ongoing professional development needs of teachers who teach inquiry-based science.
