Making Healthy Decisions

Making Healthy DecisionsKendall/Hunt Publishing Co., 1997-2000

Making Healthy Decisions is a comprehensive heath-education curriculum designed for middle school students. The curriculum includes instruction in each of five health-related areas: injury prevention; nutrition; fitness; family life; and alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. The units address major areas of concern identified by the Centers for Disease Control as those most important in preventing the onset of high-risk behaviors that lead to premature death, disease and disability among adolescents. Life-long health habits, both good and bad, are often established at a young age. This curriculum encourages adolescents to examine their lifestyle and to make informed decisions about actions that have an impact on their heaath. The activities provide students with the knowledge and skills to help them adopt and maintain behaviors that promote good health.

The complete package comprises ten units of instruction, two in each of the five areas. Unit 1 is most appropriate for students in grades 5 or 6. Unit 2 is most appropriate for students in grades 7 or 8, depending on the background and maturity of the students and their previous experience in health education. Although the units are independent, Unit 1 provides a foundation for the lessons in Unit 2. This curriculum uses the 5E model of instruction and incorporates cooperative learning.
