BSCS and NABT team up for special workshop
Integrating Case Studies and Evolution to Help Students Understand Infectious Disease

infectiousdiseasesForty science education professionals took part in the May 13 BSCS/NABT workshop, “Integrating Case Studies and Evolution to Help Students Understand Infectious Disease,” held at the AIBS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

Participants received a copy of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) module, Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases. Dave Vanier of NIH also attended the workshop, during which attendees took part in the following five activities:

• Deadly Disease Among Us
• Disease Detectives
• Superbugs: An Evolving Concern
• Protecting the Herd
• Making Hard Decisions

Participants were introduced to findings from How People Learn, and took part in a discussion on how these findings are reflected in the BSCS 5E Instructional Model. BSCS Science Educator Paul Beardsley led the workshop, which featured an opportunity to consider the activities from both the student’s and teacher’s perspective.
