Because of the BSCS commitment to science education and the use of research, I have had many opportunities to reference materials and use the skills and knowledge gained to help my district and region build and sustain science reform efforts.
BSCS teamed up with American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) to present a special evolution symposium at National Association of Biology Teachers’ (NABT) annual convention in Chicago (Fall 2004).
This book presents the proceedings of the symposium, which featured 17 speakers and five panel sessions. For detailed information on chapter contributors and education panel contributors, click here for the table of contents. The purpose of the symposium and this publication is to provide science teachers and students with a general review of the philosophical issues surrounding the teaching of evolution (part 1), a broad update on current evolutionary science from the tree of life to how evolutionary mechanisms work (part 2 and part 3), and a detailed overview of how that science produces benefits to public health (part 4) and society (part 5).
Former BSCS Executive Director Dr. Rodger Bybee presented a session titled “Teaching the Tree of Life” and took part in panel discussions.
