The module, Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases, conveys to students the relationship between basic biomedical research and the improvement of personal and public health. The inquiry-based activities build students' understanding of how human activities can increase or decrease the likelihood of outbreaks of infectious diseases. This module is designed to help students experience the process of inquiry and develop an enhanced understanding of the nature and methods of science, and to recognize the role of science in society and the relationship between basic science and personal and public health.

This curriculum supplement with CD-ROM was funded by the National Institutes of Health Office of Science Education (NIH OSE). It was developed by BSCS in cooperation with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the NIH, and Videodiscovery, Inc. of Seattle.
