BSCS is one of the most esteemed science education organizations in the world. This reputation for excellence is earned through hard work and dedication to science excellence.
Dr. Nancy M. Landes joined BSCS as a curriculum developer in 1983 and currently serves as Senior Science Educator. Since joining BSCS, she has directed a number of projects, both in curriculum and professional development. Specifically, Nancy served as the project director of two major curriculum development projects—Science for Life and Living: Integrating Science, Technology, and Health and BSCS Science TRACKS, both in elementary science education. She was part of the team that developed the BSCS 5E Instructional Model in the mid-1980s and helped cultivate the organization’s use of collaborative learning, formative assessment, and inquiry-based strategies for teaching and learning. She also served as the co-principal investigator of a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded high school implementation and dissemination project that produced the BSCS National Academy for Curriculum Leadership (NACL).
Currently, Nancy serves as the project director of the NSF-funded Science Teachers Learning from Lesson Analysis (STeLLA) research project. STeLLA is designed to help 4th- and 5th-grade teachers improve their science teaching through content deepening and videocase-based lesson analysis of science teaching and learning.
Nancy began her professional career as a classroom teacher. She has a M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction and a Ph.D. in Science Education from Michigan State University.
