Science for all is the goal set by the National Science Education Standards. For many teachers, all includes a continuum of diverse students including gifted students, English language learners, special education students, and struggling readers. Helping students achieve high standards and gain conceptual understanding is difficult in itself without the added challenge of language and/or literacy issues.
BSCS is currently developing a literacy strategy for each BSCS Biology: A Human Approach essay. Our intent is that the strategies will make science concepts more understandable while providing students with tools to increase their academic English language development. The strategies can be used with the whole class or they can provide a way to differentiate instruction.
The Literacy Strategies are in a password protected area of the BSCS Web site. If you'd like to learn how you can take advantage of these valuable teaching and learning tools, just contact us at info@bscs.org.
