Third Volume - High School Science Education: Leading the
Professional Development of Teachers in the 21st Century

The Natural SelectionThe "third in a series" volume of The Natural Selection is dedicated to our friend and colleague, Susan Loucks-Horsley (1947-2000), a respected author and gifted provider of professional development.

Susan devoted her life to supporting teachers in their quest to improve student learning. In her brief tenure as Associate Director of BSCS, Susan designed what was to become the BSCS National Academy of Curriculum Leadership (NACL), the centerpiece of the work of the BSCS Center for Professional Development. The NACL is based on the premise that well-designed curriculum materials coupled with ongoing, effective professional development can serve as the leading edge of science reform.

This volume provides readers with the research base that supports that premise along with a comparison of two models of professional development design and a description of the NACL.

Susan Loucks-HorsleyThe transformative nature of the professional development offered through BSCS is a tribute to our mentor, Susan Loucks-Horsley, who continues to inspire us to listen to teachers, to respect their knowledge and skills, and yet to challenge them to examine their beliefs and practices about teaching and learning.

As teachers engage in rich, inquiry-based professional development experiences grounded in coherent and rigorous instructional materials, they often rediscover the joy of learning. Imagine that—a focus on learning.

Isn’t that what we’re all about?

Thank you for your continuing support of BSCS and for quality science education for all learners.
