Scientific Instructional Learning Teams (SILT) – Jefferson County Public Schools, Louisville, Kentucky

  • Provide professional learning opportunities for teachers to deepen their understandings and abilities to support students making meaning of science content
  • Working to develop model teachers and classrooms that exemplify best practices that support student meaning making of science
  • Working to develop small professional learning communities that provide a reflective space for teachers to share and learn from each other around best practices that support students making meaning of science
  • Working to develop the next generation of science leaders in the Jefferson County Public School district

BSCS is working with teachers in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS):

  1. through the development of curriculum support documents that embed opportunities for students to write and discuss their scientific understandings;
  2. through the development of professional learning opportunities that focus on analyzing teacher practice and student artifacts to inform teacher practice;
  3. through the development of video-cases that articulate best practices around supporting student meaning making of science; and
  4. by supporting (through coaching) the growth of the future district and teacher leaders of JCPS.

This is a two-year program that supports both middle and high school science teachers.
