TIMSS 1999 Video Study: Science Public Release Lessons

  • Examines eighth-grade science teaching practices in more than 400 classrooms to compare practices in the United States (U.S.) to those in higher-achieving countries
  • Produced by LessonLab Research Institute, distributed by BSCS | © 2007 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • Contains five full-length videotaped lessons from five countries: Australia, Czech Republic, Japan, Netherlands, and U.S.
  • To order your five-CD set, click here.

The study is the first attempt to examine eighth-grade science lessons as they are actually delivered to students. The data presented focus on three basic questions: How did the teacher organize the lesson to support students’ opportunities to learn science? How was science represented to students in the lesson? What opportunities did students have to participate in science learning activities? For ideas about how to use video clips from this set to highlight the findings from the TIMSS study in presentations or workshops, please contact BSCS Senior Science Educator Kathy Roth.
